HEMP · GLOSSARY ENTRY

Hemp fibre

The long bast fibres of the hemp stem — the raw material for textiles, rope, paper, and biocomposites.

Why it matters

Hemp fibre has been used for textiles and rope for millennia. The bast fibres are strong, durable, and breathable. Modern revival of industrial hemp has reintroduced hemp textiles to mainstream consumer markets, though processing capacity in the US remains limited and most finished hemp fabric is still produced overseas.

In practice

Hemp fibre composites are an active research area for automotive interiors and construction. The material’s strength-to-weight ratio is competitive with fibreglass for some applications.

Common confusion

Hemp fibre and CBD hemp are functionally separate market segments — different cultivars, different processing, different supply chains.
