Hempcrete

A construction biocomposite made from hemp hurds, lime, and water — used for insulation and infill in walls.

Why it matters

Hempcrete is mixed on-site from hemp hurds (the woody inner core of the stem), hydraulic lime, and water. It is poured between formwork as an infill within a load-bearing frame. The cured material is light, insulating, breathable, and locks in atmospheric carbon over its lifecycle.

In practice

In Europe, hempcrete has been used in low-carbon construction for decades. US adoption is rising but limited by code recognition and processed-hurd supply. Energy performance and indoor air quality are the main selling points.

Common confusion

Hempcrete is not load-bearing — it is an infill material that requires a separate structural frame.
