Why it matters
Isomerisation rearranges the bonds within a molecule without changing its molecular formula. CBD and delta-8-THC are structural isomers with the same formula and different bond arrangements. Acid-catalysed isomerisation (typically using a Lewis acid catalyst in solvent) converts CBD into delta-8-THC and related products. The reaction also produces unwanted by-products that need to be removed before sale.
In practice
Quality control is the central concern. Reagent and catalyst residues, conversion impurities, and uncharacterised by-products have appeared in tested products. A clean isomerisation with rigorous post-reaction purification produces a defensible product; sloppy synthesis does not.
Common confusion
“Naturally derived” on a hemp-isomerisation product is technically accurate (the source material is plant-derived) but understates the chemistry that produced the finished compound.
