Delta-8-THC

A THC isomer that occurs naturally in cannabis at trace amounts and is now manufactured in bulk by chemical conversion of hemp-derived CBD.

Why it matters

Delta-8-THC differs from delta-9-THC by the position of one double bond on the carbon chain. The molecule is psychoactive but with reduced potency at CB1 relative to delta-9 (commonly described as “two-thirds to three-quarters” the effect at equivalent dose). Almost all commercial delta-8 is synthesised by acid-catalysed conversion of hemp-derived CBD.

In practice

For consumers in states without legal cannabis, delta-8 has functioned as a legal alternative. The 2018 Farm Bill’s definition of hemp by delta-9 content opens the regulatory window. State responses vary widely — many have banned delta-8 explicitly.

Common confusion

“Delta-8 is natural” is misleading for current products. Trace amounts are natural; commercial bulk delta-8 is a synthesis product.
