BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor)
A protein that supports neuron survival, growth, and synaptic plasticity — a frequent target of cognitive supplement marketing.
Why it matters
BDNF binds the TrkB receptor and supports learning, memory, and mood. Endogenous BDNF is increased by aerobic exercise (the most reliable intervention), stress reduction, certain dietary patterns, and some pharmacological interventions. Many nootropic compounds (lion’s mane, noopept, modest alcohol abstinence) are proposed to raise BDNF.
In practice
For consumers the relevance is that BDNF supports the brain’s capacity to learn and adapt. Interventions that raise BDNF are gradual; effects show up over weeks.
Common confusion
“BDNF boosters fix cognition” overstates the evidence — BDNF is one factor among many in cognitive function.
