Hemp genetics

The hereditary basis of hemp cultivars — the breeding, seed sourcing, and selection that determine cannabinoid profile, yield, and stability.

Why it matters

Industrial-scale hemp breeding is a recent discipline in the US — most modern CBD-dominant genetics descend from a small handful of foundational cultivars developed during the post-2014 hemp research pilot programmes. Genetic stability (a strain reliably producing the same cannabinoid ratios across seasons) is a critical factor for commercial growers.

In practice

For consumers, the genetic provenance of the source plant rarely appears on a label. For growers it determines yield, compliance with the THC threshold, disease resistance, and the cannabinoid output that drives every downstream product.

Common confusion

“All hemp is the same plant” is botanically true but commercially misleading — within the species, genetics drive enormous variation.
