HEMP · GLOSSARY ENTRY

Hemp strain

A cultivar of Cannabis sativa bred or selected for specific characteristics within the hemp legal threshold.

Why it matters

Hemp strains exist on the same continuum as cannabis strains but are filtered by the 0.3% delta-9-THC limit. Modern CBD-dominant hemp cultivars (Cherry Wine, Lifter, Hawaiian Haze, Sour Space Candy) produce flower that closely resembles cannabis flower in appearance and aroma but stays under the legal THC threshold.

In practice

Strain matters to consumers for terpene profile, cannabinoid ratios, and effect. Smokable hemp markets in particular treat strain selection seriously, with sophisticated consumers picking by terpene profile much as cannabis consumers do.

Common confusion

“Hemp strains all feel the same” is wrong — the terpene + minor cannabinoid variation across hemp strains produces meaningful subjective differences.
