CBD pharmacokinetics

The study of how CBD is absorbed, distributed, metabolised, and excreted — the basis for evidence-based dosing decisions.

Why it matters

CBD’s pharmacokinetic profile is unusual for a consumer compound. Oral bioavailability is low, distribution into adipose tissue is high, metabolism is via CYP3A4 and CYP2C19, and elimination half-life is long. Steady-state plasma levels after chronic dosing take days to a week to establish.

In practice

For consumers the practical takeaways: dosing on an empty stomach delivers less CBD than dosing with fatty food; effect builds across the first week of consistent use; sublingual administration improves bioavailability over swallowed oil.

Common confusion

“CBD only works after weeks of use” is partly right (chronic accumulation effects) and partly wrong (single-dose effects are detectable in minutes for inhaled and within an hour for sublingual).
