CBD for pets

CBD products formulated for animal use — most commonly dogs and cats, with dose-finding adapted to body weight and species pharmacokinetics.

Why it matters

Dogs and cats have endocannabinoid systems and respond to CBD, though with species-specific differences. Dogs have a higher density of cannabinoid receptors than humans, which is the reason for the well-known canine sensitivity to THC. CBD doses for pets typically scale to body weight (~0.25–0.5mg/kg twice daily as a starting range).

In practice

Product format matters: pet-specific tinctures, treats, and capsules dose more precisely than dividing a human product. THC must be near zero for pets, and xylitol — common in human gummies — is fatal to dogs.

Common confusion

“My CBD works for me, so my dog can have some” is a common mistake. Human formulations may contain ingredients toxic to pets.
