Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus)
A medicinal mushroom proposed to support nerve growth factor (NGF) production and cognitive function.
Why it matters
Lion’s Mane contains hericenones and erinacines that have been shown in cell and animal studies to stimulate NGF synthesis. Small human trials show modest benefits in mild cognitive impairment. The mechanism is more about preserving and growing neurons than acutely enhancing cognition.
In practice
Available formats include whole-mushroom powders, dual extracts (water + alcohol), and isolated extracts. Dual extracts at 1–2g daily are the typical effective range. Effects build over weeks.
Common confusion
“Lion’s Mane gives you a smart-drug effect” overstates the case — the evidence is for slow, structural benefits rather than acute cognitive enhancement.
