Hemp protein

A plant protein powder pressed from defatted hemp seeds — complete amino acid profile and good digestibility.

Why it matters

Hemp seeds contain about 25% protein by weight. The protein is concentrated by pressing the seeds for oil and milling the resulting meal into powder. The amino acid profile is complete (all nine essential amino acids) and the dominant protein, edestin, is well-tolerated and easily digested.

In practice

Hemp protein is a workable plant-protein supplement for vegans and athletes seeking a non-whey, non-soy option. The taste is earthier than pea or rice protein; the fibre content is higher.

Common confusion

Hemp protein and CBD have nothing in common pharmacologically — the protein product is a nutritional supplement, not a cannabinoid product.
