HEMP · GLOSSARY ENTRY

Hemp seed oil

A culinary and cosmetic oil pressed from hemp seeds — contains essentially no cannabinoids, distinct from CBD oil.

Why it matters

Hemp seed oil is a nutritional oil pressed from the seeds of Cannabis sativa, rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and gamma-linolenic acid. The seeds themselves contain negligible cannabinoids. The oil is used in food, supplements, and skincare formulations and has been legally available in most jurisdictions long before the cannabinoid market opened.

In practice

In skincare, hemp seed oil functions as a non-comedogenic lightweight moisturiser. In supplements, it provides a balanced fatty acid profile. It is not interchangeable with CBD oil for cannabinoid-related purposes.

Common confusion

“Hemp oil” on a product label sometimes means hemp seed oil and sometimes means CBD oil. The distinction matters; the product should disclose which.
