Why it matters
MCT oil is fractionated from coconut or palm oil and contains primarily C8 and C10 fatty acids. Compared to long-chain oils it is liquid at room temperature, absorbs through a more direct metabolic pathway, and provides a stable lipid environment for CBD. The combination of stability, neutral flavour, and absorption pharmacokinetics made MCT the default tincture carrier.
In practice
For consumers, “MCT-based” on a tincture label is usually a good sign — it indicates a deliberate carrier choice rather than a generic vegetable oil. The downside is that some people experience GI upset from MCT, particularly at higher doses.
Common confusion
“MCT” and “coconut oil” are not interchangeable — MCT is fractionated from coconut, but coconut oil also contains long-chain saturated fats that are not MCTs.
