CBD tincture

A CBD oil designed for sublingual or oral administration — typically CBD dissolved in MCT, hemp seed, or olive oil, dropped under the tongue from a calibrated dropper.

Why it matters

A tincture format trades the higher bioavailability of vaping for the longer duration and more controllable dose of oral administration. Sublingual hold (60–90 seconds) lets a portion of the dose absorb through mucosal tissue and bypass first-pass liver metabolism; the swallowed remainder reaches systemic circulation more slowly.

In practice

Dose accuracy depends on the dropper. Quality tinctures use calibrated 1mL droppers and label CBD content per mL or per drop. Onset is 15–45 minutes via sublingual + GI absorption, with peak at 1–2 hours and duration 4–8 hours.

Common confusion

“Tincture” technically describes an alcohol-based extract; most CBD “tinctures” sold today are oil-based and are tinctures by convention rather than chemistry.
