KCPA (Kratom Consumer Protection Act)

A model regulatory framework adopted by more than twenty US states that legalises kratom for adults but imposes minimum standards on labelling, age, testing, and 7-OH content.

Why it matters

A typical KCPA prohibits sales to people under 21 (sometimes 18), requires third-party testing for contaminants, mandates labelling that includes alkaloid content, restricts adulterants, and caps the concentration of 7-hydroxymitragynine in finished products. The bill is promoted nationally by the American Kratom Association as an alternative to outright bans.

In practice

For consumers in a KCPA state, the practical effect is a noticeable rise in product disclosure quality. Brands that previously refused to publish COAs come into compliance. 7-OH-heavy shots and extracts are reformulated or pulled from shelves. For brands that already practised lab transparency the legal change makes little practical difference.

Common confusion

KCPA is sometimes characterised as a kratom ban. The opposite is closer to the case — it is the legalisation framework most kratom advocates support.
