MOTS-c

RESEARCH PEPTIDES · GLOSSARY ENTRY

MOTS-c

A mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded in mitochondrial DNA — proposed to support metabolic function and insulin sensitivity.

Why it matters

MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the Twelve S rRNA-c) is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA. Discovered in 2015, it appears to act as a hormone that modulates whole-body metabolism, with cell and animal studies showing improved insulin sensitivity and exercise capacity.

In practice

Research use is exploratory. Human pharmacokinetics are not well characterised. The peptide is sold in the research-only market at typical doses of 5–10mg subcutaneously per administration.

Common confusion

“MOTS-c is the new exercise mimetic” overstates the evidence — animal models are suggestive; human translation is unproven.
