Caffeine (nootropic context)

The world’s most widely used cognitive enhancer — an adenosine receptor antagonist that increases alertness, attention, and reaction time.

Why it matters

Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, preventing the sleep-pressure signal from binding. Downstream effects include increased dopamine and norepinephrine activity, improved reaction time, enhanced sustained attention, and reduced perception of effort during physical and mental work. The cognitive benefits are well-documented and reliably replicable.

In practice

Typical effective doses are 100–200mg. Tolerance to alertness effects develops over days to weeks of daily use; tolerance to vascular and side-effect profiles is slower. Cycling (lower doses on rest days, weekly breaks) preserves more of the acute alertness benefit.

Common confusion

“Caffeine isn’t a nootropic” is wrong — it is the best-evidenced cognitive enhancer in the consumer market.
