Why it matters
Kratom has been used in southern Thailand for centuries — chewed fresh, brewed as tea, and used in folk medicine. Thailand criminalised kratom in 1943 and only decriminalised possession and trade in 2021. Commercial Thai cultivation is rebuilding but most “Thai” kratom on Western markets is grown elsewhere under the strain label.
In practice
Where genuine Thai leaf is available, the cultivar tradition includes some of the highest mitragynine concentrations on record. For most consumers, “Thai” on a Western label should be treated as a strain claim subject to COA verification rather than a literal origin claim.
Common confusion
Thai strain labels are sometimes paired with high-potency marketing language. Be especially cautious about extract products labelled “Thai” — these are often standardised concentrates with very different pharmacology than leaf.
