THCP (Tetrahydrocannabiphorol)

A naturally occurring cannabinoid with a longer alkyl side chain than THC — substantially more potent at CB1 in vitro and present in trace amounts in cannabis.

Why it matters

THCP was identified in 2019 in a specific cannabis cultivar. Its seven-carbon alkyl side chain (vs THC’s five-carbon) gives it roughly 30x the binding affinity at CB1 in vitro. Whether that translates linearly to subjective potency in humans is not yet established — receptor affinity is one of several determinants of effect.

In practice

Commercial THCP products on the hemp-derived market are typically synthesised from CBD. As with other hemp-derived novel cannabinoids, COA documentation of identity and purity is critical and inconsistent.

Common confusion

“THCP is 30x stronger than THC” is a quotable but imprecise claim. The 30x figure is in vitro binding affinity; subjective effect potency in vivo is less clearly characterised.
