Winterisation

A post-extraction refining step that removes fats, waxes, and lipids from a CBD or cannabis extract by chilling it in ethanol and filtering the precipitate.

Why it matters

Crude extract typically contains co-extracted fats and waxes that cloud the final product, alter mouthfeel, and (for vape carts) clog hardware. Winterisation dissolves the crude in ethanol, chills it well below freezing, and filters out the precipitated lipids before solvent recovery.

In practice

A properly winterised extract is clear, smooth, and easier to formulate. Most premium CBD oils and most cannabis vape carts are winterised.

Common confusion

Winterisation removes some of the plant’s lipid-bound trace compounds. The trade-off between purity and matrix completeness is one of the technical reasons “full-spectrum” claims vary so much in practice.
