CBD drug interactions

The clinically relevant interactions between CBD and prescription medications — driven mainly by CBD’s inhibition of CYP3A4 and CYP2C19.

Why it matters

High-risk co-administration categories include anti-seizure medications (clobazam, valproate), blood thinners (warfarin), benzodiazepines, statins, certain antidepressants, immunosuppressants (tacrolimus), and chemotherapy agents metabolised by the same enzymes. The interaction generally raises plasma concentrations of the affected drug, sometimes substantially.

In practice

Practical guidance: anyone on chronic prescription medication should consult a pharmacist before starting CBD, particularly at doses above 25mg daily. Lower doses carry lower interaction risk but are not interaction-free.

Common confusion

“CBD is natural so it cannot interact with prescriptions” is wrong and dangerous.
