CANNABIS · GLOSSARY ENTRY

Pinene

A pine-scented monoterpene found in cannabis, pine needles, and rosemary — associated with mental clarity and counteracting THC-induced memory impairment.

Why it matters

Alpha- and beta-pinene are the same molecules that give pine forests their scent. In cannabis, pinene-dominant cultivars are often described as clear-headed. Pharmacologically pinene is a weak acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, which has driven the hypothesis that it counteracts some of THC’s short-term memory effects.

In practice

Pinene-rich cultivars tend to feel functional and alert. The terpene is volatile and oxidises easily, so freshness of flower matters more for pinene than for less volatile terpenes.

Common confusion

“Pine-scented = focus” is a useful first approximation but the effect depends on the full cannabinoid + terpene profile.
