CANNABIS · GLOSSARY ENTRY

Limonene

A citrus-scented monoterpene found in cannabis and citrus peels — associated with mood-elevating, anxiolytic effects in cannabis cultivars where it dominates.

Why it matters

Limonene is the second most common terpene in many cannabis cultivars and the primary terpene in lemon peels. Animal and small human studies suggest anxiolytic and antidepressant effects, possibly via 5-HT1A receptor modulation. Cultivars high in limonene are often labelled “mood-lift” or “uplifting.”

In practice

Practical note: limonene-dominant cultivars tend to suit daytime use. The terpene is volatile and degrades with heat, so vaping at lower temperatures preserves more than combustion does.

Common confusion

A “lemon” smell does not guarantee limonene-dominance; terpinolene and other citrus-leaning terpenes can produce similar aromas with different effects. The COA is the reliable signal.
