Why it matters
CBDA is what raw hemp actually contains in bulk. The conversion to CBD happens with heat, light, and time. Pharmacologically CBDA is a more selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2 than CBD and binds 5-HT1A serotonin receptors with high affinity, which has driven interest in CBDA for nausea and anxiety.
In practice
CBDA-stabilised products (cold-extracted tinctures, raw flower) preserve the acid form. Most conventional CBD oil sold today is mostly decarboxylated and contains little CBDA.
Common confusion
CBDA is not “just CBD before it’s ready.” It has its own pharmacology and is increasingly studied as a stand-alone compound.
