Semaglutide
A weekly GLP-1 receptor agonist — marketed as Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy for diabetes and obesity, the breakthrough drug of the modern GLP-1 era.
Why it matters
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 agonist with a one-week half-life. The injectable formulations (Ozempic for diabetes, Wegovy for obesity) deliver weight-loss outcomes around 15% of body weight at the higher dose. The oral formulation (Rybelsus) is the first oral GLP-1, with somewhat lower bioavailability but the convenience of pill administration.
In practice
Standard injectable dose titration steps from 0.25mg to 2.4mg weekly over months. Research peptide market semaglutide has proliferated; the regulatory and quality concerns are substantial.
Common confusion
“Generic Ozempic” semaglutide from compounding pharmacies and research markets is not equivalent to FDA-approved branded semaglutide in purity or dose accuracy.
