Bacopa Monnieri

An Ayurvedic herb associated with memory enhancement — one of the better-evidenced cognitive supplements for chronic memory benefit.

Why it matters

Bacopa contains bacosides that modulate dopamine, serotonin, and acetylcholine and have antioxidant effects on neural tissue. Clinical trials (12 weeks or longer) show benefits in working memory, retention, and information processing speed. Effects build slowly.

In practice

Typical doses are 300mg of standardised extract (50% bacosides) daily. The slow onset is a key practical feature — bacopa is a months-long intervention, not an acute cognitive enhancer.

Common confusion

“Bacopa works in days” is wrong — the studies showing benefit take weeks to months.
