Why it matters
Cannabinoids interconvert under specific conditions. CBGA converts to CBDA, THCA, and CBCA in the plant. Heat decarboxylates the acid forms to their active equivalents. Oxidation converts THC to CBN over time. Industrial acid catalysis converts CBD to delta-8-THC. Each conversion follows established chemistry; the cleanliness of the transformation depends on reaction control and purification.
In practice
For consumers the relevant question on a hemp-derived product is whether the cannabinoids are natural extractions or conversion products, and what controls were applied during conversion. The COA settles identity; the manufacturing disclosure settles process.
Common confusion
“Converted cannabinoid” is sometimes treated as synonymous with “synthetic.” Strictly, conversion is a chemical transformation of a natural product — closer to refining than to total synthesis.
