Phytocannabinoid

A cannabinoid produced by a plant — most familiarly cannabis, but the term encompasses any plant-source cannabinoid.

Why it matters

“Phyto-” simply means “plant.” Phytocannabinoids include THC, CBD, CBG, CBC, CBN and the rest of the cannabis cannabinoid family. Other plants produce cannabinoid-like compounds — Echinacea contains N-alkylamides that bind CB2; black truffles produce small amounts of anandamide — but cannabis remains the most prolific phytocannabinoid source.

In practice

The term distinguishes plant cannabinoids from endogenous cannabinoids (anandamide, 2-AG) and synthetic cannabinoids (laboratory-made compounds like JWH-018). For consumers, “phytocannabinoid” on a label is essentially synonymous with “cannabis or hemp cannabinoid.”

Common confusion

“Phytocannabinoid” is sometimes used to imply a safer or more natural class than synthetic. The pharmacology depends on the specific molecule rather than its origin.
