Why it matters
Raw cannabis contains acid cannabinoids that are largely inactive at CB1. Heating drives off carbon dioxide and converts them to the neutral, active forms. The reaction occurs gradually at room temperature, faster with heat, and effectively instantly at smoking or vaping temperatures.
In practice
For edibles, decarbing flower (typically 100–120°C for 30–45 minutes) before infusion ensures the final product contains active THC rather than THCA. Skipping the step produces edibles that under-deliver.
Common confusion
“Eating raw weed gets you high” is a misconception — the acid forms are non-psychoactive until decarbed.
