Mitragyna speciosa

The botanical name for the kratom tree — a member of the coffee family (Rubiaceae) native to Southeast Asia.

Why it matters

Mitragyna speciosa is an evergreen tropical tree that grows wild in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, and parts of Papua New Guinea. Its leaves have been chewed, brewed, or smoked as a stimulant, analgesic, and antidiarrhoeal across the region for centuries, with the most documented continuous use in southern Thailand and the Malay Peninsula. The genus name “Mitragyna” was coined in the 19th century by Dutch botanist Pieter Korthals; “speciosa” simply means “showy.”

In practice

For consumers, the relevance is sourcing: virtually all commercial kratom on Western markets is grown in Indonesia, processed locally, and exported. The cultivar, soil, altitude, harvest timing, and post-harvest drying method together determine the alkaloid ratio of the finished leaf. Vendors that disclose origin region (e.g., West Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Sumatra) and processing method are giving the buyer more useful information than vendors that disclose only “premium.”

Common confusion

“Kratom” is sometimes treated as if it were a single, standardised product. It is not — Mitragyna speciosa is a botanical genus whose phytochemistry varies more than coffee varies. Two leaves with the same species name and the same colour vein label can be pharmacologically very different.
